Spur Straps

There are basically two types of spurs. When you buy horse tack, the Western spur is what you may want to buy if you are riding in shows. These show spurs are silver inlaid and quite beautiful and often they are companions of the show saddles that are also silver accented. There are the working spurs used for rounding up cattle and roping which are plainer. The show spur has the name of the ranch or the name of the rider engraved on it. The boot cowboy spur for the working rancher (or cowboy) is worn by a professional who knows his horse and respects it. It is for this reason that the cowboy is not interested in hurting the horse. When they buy spurs with sharp points (rowels) they’ll often file them down to make them less dangerous. There are spurs that have rowels that are squared off and spurs that have no rowels at all, called humane spurs.

The use of the boot spur is merely to give the horse guidance, not to punish it with aggressive action. Many of the saddles that are used today are lighter than the old ones allowing the leg to be closer to the body of the horse, and horses are able to feel what the rider wants by leg, knee and calf movements. It’s interesting to see where the fantasy of a cowboy digging into the hide of the horse urging it on to ride faster and harder is so different from the truth of the matter. Cowboy spurs are simply aids, and the relationship between horse and rider is well understood for good riding.

Spurs were thought to originally be made of wood and bone rather than metal, having been around since certainly, the Etruscan times. There are pictures of various horsemen from before Christ who who are wearing spurs. The spur has been modified over the years to come to the present day style. If anything, they have become much more humane. You'll find spurs ranging from Europe to North America, from Asia to South America and as far south as Patagonia. You'll want to invest in spur straps or specifically, spur straps for Western riders.

Bull riding while wearing spurs in arena events is not for aggression. They are for balance and grip. Bulls don’t need the encouragement to buck. Their hides are tough and rowels on boot spurs are filed down so they are dull and not injure them. It is important to know that when a bull rider “spurs” a bull, it is for show so that the judge will increase the points.
