| Once you've bought your horse tack, there is much advice and many opinions on the care of leather. One thing is quite clear, that horse tack needs to be continually inspected even when not used for reasons of prolonging the life of the leather and for safety of the rider. You will want to know how to clean leather. There is also much advice on what types and brands of products should be and should not be used. Lexol, Lexol Leather Conditioner (used after Lexol Leather Cleaner), Murphy’s, Neatsfoot Oil, glycerin soap and saddle soap etc. each are favorites of different riders. It can be confusing as to just what to use since many of these opinions are just that, opinions based on personal experience or product preference. However, there are a few general rules that do apply. For instance, cleaning leather saddles, bridles, reins or halters is especially important after use, when exposed to rain/wet and exposed to salt/sweat. It is necessary for safety to go over tack carefully. Straps can have stretched holes or weakened leather. Check for cracks, strain, wear (is the leather thin in some places?) and tear. It is important to check stitching. And, of course, check for mold. Once it gets into your leather it can be impossible to remove. Sometimes you can think you’ve taken care of it, only to find it reappear the next time the saddle gets damp. Try to avoid it in the first place. Once cleaned, don’t leave your saddle on the floor or ground to dry. Store your saddle up on a rack. Use a cloth, either a pillowcase or a saddle cover. And it is probably a good idea to use a carrier saddle for Western or English when you transport your saddle. Your saddle and leather goods, such as breast collars, should be made of good quality leather and should be treated with care. If you clean them and use saddle covers, they can last for a long time and look better with age. |
