There are documents from the 11th century showing bridles and horse reins. Some of them are double reins, some are single, some are made of chain and some extravagantly fancy. Most reins used today are made of leather and often there is the reins rope. One difference between English riding and Western riding is that with English you use two hands on the reins, with Western you hold the reins with one hand. It is how we use the hand with the rein that we guide the horse. There are also double reins.There is a direct style of communication which means that the horse goes in the direction of the rein used: the left rein guides him left, the right rein guides it right. Western neck reining means the horse goes left with the right rein and right with the left rein. Not communicating clearly to the horse is the main problem of learning to rein, which may seem obvious since using reins is exactly that, communicating. It is easy to give the horse unclear directions which confuse him. The Reining Association formalized these cowboy contests. These routines are to be performed with just one hand (Western style) on a fast and irregular moving horse. To the specific routines there has been added a freestyle contest which includes music and fancy dress.
