A bridle consists of a bit, reins and a headstall. The headstall is the bands of leather that go over the horses head and to which the bit and reins are attached. One thing that is good for trail riding is using the headstall without a bit. It is much easier on the horse. Some headstalls and some Western headstalls are one-eared. Horse-Tack-World sells headstalls, one-eared headstalls and a custom headstall. We also carry show headstalls with breast collars to match.

Breast collars strap around the front of the horse and are attached to the saddle to keep it from sliding backwards. However, it is not to be connected so tightly that it keeps the saddle in place if the saddle doesn’t fit correctly. There would be far too much weight on the breast collar. Another thing to be aware of is the fit. Make sure it rides neither too high so that it cuts off the horse’s breathing or too low and it limits movement. When you examine your horse tack, the horse breast collar should be examined for weaknesses in the leather, cracks and thread work. It should be kept soft so it is won’t cut into the horse, especially when on long rides. One opinion is that when you use a breast collar you can make the cinch just a little bit looser. This can be especially advantageous on long rides like trail riding. Having a well and happy horse is most important, whether it is equipment adjustment or horse medication when it is ill.
