This horse tack supply item is called a cinch in American Western riding and a girth in England and Australia. They are the straps that go under the horse (around his middle) to hold a saddle on. They can be made of leather or neoprene, with a layer of fleece or cloth next to the horse. It is important that when you pull up the cinch straps to make them fit snuggly, (usually leaving the cinch loose enough that your hand can fit in between the horse and the girth) and that you do so slowly. Horses, like a human, do not like to be suddenly yanked up tight in the middle. Sometimes a horse will “blow up”. Some people have interpreted this to mean they suck in air and hold their breath, making the horse girth ultimately fit looser, and making it hard to attach the cinch at the correct amount of tightness. It is thought that what actually happens is that if the horse is afraid of the cinch/saddle they will tense up their abdominal muscles and it causes the same problem as if the abdomen becomes larger than they should be at rest. At any rate, an easy hand, slow movements and soft talking can help in this situation to help him to relax, allaying his fears to accomplish the correct cinching.

Girth galls are a real problem for horses. They are tiny lumps that form under the skin behind the horses elbow where the girths ride. If not attended to the hair falls out and they develop into open sores. Sometimes these are caused by horse girths that are too tight, unclean, perhaps burrs or seeds or dirt have become ground into the girth and irritate the horse. Cracks in neoprene girths or hair balls from mohair girths can also cause these problems. Sometimes they can be caused by the saddle being too far forward and they rub the wrong way. The warning is to keep the cinch clean. Check it before each ride. Felt and fleece are two good products inside the girth to ride next to the horse. Check it to make sure they are not rubbed clean in any area.leaving leather next to the skin.

Be aware of other possible problems with cinches. The horse can get fungal infections, bacterial infections both symptoms of girth itch. These can be spread, so it is necessary to make sure you use antibiotics and antifungal medicine. These problems can be caused and aggravated by girths that are overly sweaty, moist, or they can spread from other areas. Make sure the cinch is dry and clean whenever you use it. If the infection (itch) is severe you should not ride the horse, but you can exercise it, nonetheless.

A flank strap is used for making a bull buck. Bull riding is a popular sport. The flank strap is a leather strap, lined in fleece that is strapped around the body in the flank area of the bull. Many people think it is tied around the bull’s testicles, but it is not true. It does however encourage bucking. There is also a misconception that sharp objects are attached to the flank strap to encourage a bull to buck. Not only is that not done, but bulls don’t need that encouragement. Bulls buck and anything that restricts it’s movements would act counter to that desired action. With that in mind, it is not necessary to use spurs, however the bull hide is tough and the riders do use them for show style to get points from the judges.Flank straps are used in rodeo contests. The flank strap is attached in such a way that it can be released easily and quickly, once the bull leaves the ring.
