The bridle has been used since Roman times and before. There are pieces of artwork showing bridles that would be considered a horse show bridle by today’s standards, as they are quite ornate. Bridles are horse tack items that consist of a headstall, bit and reins. They are used for guiding the horse. They can be different styles, such as Western bridle, English or a show bridle, pony birdles or bit bridles. It is important that you keep bridles clean and well taken care of, as with all of your horse tack. We carry bridle holders and bridle brackets that can help you keep your horse bridles neat and up off the floor. Because bridles are made of leather, leather care is a must. They should be cleaned, conditioned and examined regularly. Make sure the horse bridle or pony bridle is in good condition, that the stitching is still in tact and that there are no cracks or worn holes in the straps. Make sure the bit is in good condition, that there are no cracks or pits in the metal. If they are rubber bits, make sure there are no cracks in the rubber or that the rubber has hardened through age. Make sure the bit fits well and is comfortable in the horses mouth. A couple of hints in using bridles: make sure you bridle a horse after you saddle it, go slowly and carefully so you don't scare the horse. You can use a halter to keep the horse steady while you're bridling and you can also use the halter and lead as a soft hackamore.
